Dear Ballantyne Families:
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Ballantyne! We are Rebecca Zelinski, the full-time art teacher.
Students have art for a 45 minute period every week. Most projects take two to four weeks to complete. Skills taught in the different areas of art are covered in an increasingly in depth manner at each grade level so that students enter middle school with a strong foundation of media and art appreciation knowledge. We use the North Carolina Essential Art Standards when developing our lessons.
Artwork is displayed in the halls throughout the school year and we enter student work in various art exhibitions through CMS as well. Displaying student work empowers and encourages our students!
Our art program gives students the opportunity to explore a great variety of media in both fine arts and crafts, such as drawing, painting, ceramics fiber arts. Exposure to renowned artists and their works strengthens student appreciation of art and the important role it plays in our society. Art is an excellent avenue for the development of concrete and critical thinking skills, for students must problem solve when creating artwork and interpreting the work of other artists.
As art teachers, we work collaboratively with classroom teachers, and often integrate art lessons with the core curricula, thus reinforcing objectives taught in other areas. Creative writing, social studies, math and science can be incorporated into many art projects, which results in a more meaningful learning experience for our students as they experience how artists may synthesize knowledge of other disciplines in their work. Art education strengthens world knowledge, thinking skills on many levels, and connections to other disciplines, adding greatly to the whole learning experience of the child.
We are excited to begin the new school year with our Ballantyne families!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Zelinski
